| On August 19, 2010: |
| Steve Sebelius, CityLife Editor and author of the political blog SlashPolitics.com spoke to our NVDC members and guests on the upcoming elections at the national, state and local levels. His keen understanding and tongue-in-cheek wit made for a great presentation. Steve also serves as political commentator for Las Vegas's KLAS Channel 8. Candidate for Nevada Lt. Governor Jessica Sferrazza and candidate for Clark County Public Administrator John Cahill also attended and spoke briefly about their need for support in the November elections. | |

Food Needed NVDC Wants to Help
|
The Organization for America-North Western Las Vegas Volunteers will be making a delivery to Whitney School on Friday, the 27th of August. Whitney already has a good supply of the week-end food bag items sized for individuals because of a recent large donation. Whitney sends home those individual packs of food with about 250 students each Friday for the week-end. These bags contain food in individual containers, like pop top cans of ravioli or Vienna Sausages and individual snacks.
What they need now is large size (bulk) food supplies for families whose general food supply is low. Since unemployment benefits have been stopped and/or delayed, real hardship has hit many families. The large-size items are broken up into smaller sizes enough for en entire family. These are put into Whitney's food bank for parents to pick up. One of their regular supplies is dried beans such as large 25 lb. bags. The bags are divided into smaller family-sized bags for distribution. The same is done with large bags of rice. Dried beans are the biggest need right now, but they use both regularly. Canned meats of any kind like tuna, chicken, spam, stew, etc. are also needed to stretch the beans and rice. As usual children's socks and underwear are also needed. Please watch for sales on any of these items and share the information. Any contributions you can make can be picked up or dropped off at Sue Brooks' home, 6209 Newkirk Ct.. Give her a call at (702) 755-0860 to make arrangements. Donations go directly to families in need, so it is a great way to help locally. NVDC encourages its members and friends to help out. Call Sue to have your donation picked up by a volunteer if you'd like. |

On July 15, 2010 NVDC Presented: Conservation in Southern Nevada: An Update on the Tule Springs Ice Age Park and an Introduction to the Proposed Gold Butte National Conservation Area |
Jill DeStefano, President, Protectors of Tule Springs and Nancy Hall, President of Friends of Gold Butte spoke at our July meeting. |
|
Jill DeStefano reports that boundaries have been agreed to by the Cities of NLV and LV and by Clark County and the U.S. Air Force and by a huge group of every conceivable environmental coalition one can think of. Not one group opposed. Yet, the devil is in the details and there is still no legislation. Jill is sure partisan politics in an election year is a big part of the delay. -Jill DeStefano 5/26/10

 Cheerleaders for Wall Street |
| As President Obama and Democrats in Congress fought and continue to fight to pass comprehensive financial reform, what did the Republicans do? They nominated the Wall Street lobbyist Dan Coats in Indiana and one of the biggest Wall Street cheerleaders they could find, Rob Portman in Ohio.
