This Las Vegas Sun video news story was made in 2008. In August, 2009, presentations at NVDC and at the NLV Homeowners' Association Alliance discussed the strong liklihood that much of the land along the Sheep Mountain Range will, within one year, become The Tule Springs National Monument with a portion east of Sun City-Aliante to eventually be developed into a national Ice Age Park to attract tourism to this treasured area.

Evening on Public Schools in North Valley
Chris Garvey at NVDC
Ms Chris Garvey, Trustee of the Clark County School District spoke at the September 17, 2009 meeting in Aliante on issues affecting the north valley schools. Budget concerns were the highlight of her discussion.
Garvey explained that per pupil expenditures per year in the Clark County School Ditrict (CCSD) were less than $6,000. That is among the lowest in America. She also explained that the tax money collected from Clark County tax payers is sent north to Carson City and less is returned to Clark County Schools than what remains up north. Difficulties in passing bond referenda were also discussed. Garvey cautioned the audience not to believe negative rumors about CCSD. Instead, we needed to take pride in CCSD student achievements and in what may be the end to growth in class size at many grade levels. Although class size can sometimes approach 40 at the Jr. or Sr. High School level, average class sizes are only in the teens in the first few grades of elementary school.
A source of particular pride is the magnificent technology centers built by CCSD in the valley, some having already been refurbished in the past few years. She expressed thanks to NVDC for deciding on our school supply drive (described by NVDC Board member Ken Kraft) to help CCSD needy schools. Reacting to a suggestion from Jeff Kaiser, Garvey agreed to contact the appropriate people at CCSD central office about tapping into the resources of senior citizens in the North Valley, especially in Sun City-Aliante where over 4,000 seniors reside. Kaiser explained the success of such senior-volunteer programs in schools near UNLV. Mike Pascoe suggested Ms. Garvey might want to come to Sun-City-Aliante to speak at a Manager's Hour to raise awareness of the need for volunteerism in the North Valley.

CCSD Superintendent Decides on President Obama's Back to School Address
The President's address was broadcast live Tuesday, September 8, at 9 a.m. Las Vegas time (PST) on the White House Web site. Here it is:
Showing respect for academic freedom, CCSD Superintendent Walt Ruffles has encouraged teachers to show CCSD students President Obama's "Back to School" address so long as the teacher feels it is appropriate to the curriculum being taught. He communicated to parents and teachers that students and teachers are not required to watch the address. Parents can request that their children participate in some alternate activity during that time by merely calling their child's school. Below is Superintendent Rulffes' letter sent to parents, students and staff:
To Clark County School District Parents, Students and Staff:
You may be aware that the U.S. Department of Education will provide a link to President Obama's address on education, which will air on Tuesday, September 8, at 9 a.m. local time. In addition, lesson plans were provided for teacher use at http://www.ed.gov/index.jhtml.
After the address, the archived video will be available at http://www.whitehouse.gov/mediaresources/ as well as www.ed.gov for those who wish to view it at their convenience. Teachers and students are not required to view the address as it is delivered. However, some teachers may determine that the activities and speech are compatible with their current curriculum and might take advantage of this opportunity.
Parents who prefer their children participate in an alternative curriculum-based activity may make that request by calling their children's schools.
Sincerely,
Walt Rulffes
Superintendent

The North Valley Democratic Club (NVDC) had the honor of hearing Congresswoman Shelley Berkley speak at our August 20th meeting. Congresswoman Berkley has been very active in U.S. foreign relations and has been extremely successful in representing Southern Nevada in Washington. During the past two months alone, she has:
secured House approval for more than $4 million in Nevada priorities included in the 2010 Energy and Water funding bill.
secured House approval for $26 million in federal funding for construction of an Army National Guard readiness center in North Las Vegas.
announced that $170,000 in federal funding has been awarded through the U.S. Department of Labor to the southern Nevada based U.S. Vets facility.
has supported legislation that will create new green jobs, increase renewable power, and strengthen America’s energy security.
NVDC members had priority seating at the August 20th event starting with 6:30 socializing. The meeting began at 7:00 PM with Congresswoman Berkley's speech followed by a candid open discussion of questions from the floor.
Among the many items discussed were the possible effects of various national health care plans on North Valley citizens including the preference for a federal health insurance option. Also discussed were the Federal recovery funds entering the valley, alternative energy sources, and the need for lender cooperation before house mortgage foreclosures. Our valley is among the hardest hit in the nation-wide housing crisis.
